I just noticed a review for this book, which I haven't yet read, but which is based on a fascinating article that I read in Harper's a couple of years ago. The author, a professor and novelist, went to Vegas to do an article on the World Series of Poker, but, unbeknownst to his editor, used the $4000 advance for the article as seed money to actually enter the competition; he ended up making it to the final table and walking home with $250k. Great story.
