I've been PUNK'D! Turns out the Metallica story was a ruse. At least I can take some comfort in the fact that I was one of a whole listserv of pop music scholars who were suckered. And the guy who did it did a brilliant job of fabricating the MTV News and Metallica website templates.

If you've used the chords E and F, in that order, expect to hear a call from the lawyers of famously litigious heavy-metal band Metallica. scoopthis.com reports here on how the band is suing unsigned Canadian band Unfaith for ripping off these "Metallica-branded chords."

"We're not saying we own the E chord, or even the F - that would be ridiculous," they explain in this official statement. "We're just saying that together, people have grown to associate them with our music, and their continued use in the same song causes confusion, deception and mistake in the minds of the public."

Maybe next they'll start suing people for copying the "Metallica-branded" habit of engaging in frivolous lawsuits.
